Taiwan is one of the easiest places in Asia for an American to drive: same right-hand traffic, same left-hand-drive cars, English on the road signs, and no toll booths to stop at on the freeway. What actually trips people up is not the driving — it is arriving without the right paperwork, staying past 30 days without an endorsement, and underestimating two things: scooter traffic and Taiwan's child-seat rules. The one document to sort out before you fly: the IDP

Taiwan recognises International Driving Permits issued by reciprocating countries, and the United States is one of them. Every GoodCars branch applies the same check, and it is a set of three:

• Your original US driver's licence — an IDP is not a licence on its own and is only valid alongside it.
• An International Driving Permit, issued in the US by AAA or AATA. Get it before you leave: it cannot be obtained once you are in Taiwan.

The 30-day rule: when you need an endorsement

This is the part Americans most often miss:

Bring your passport (with the entry stamp), your US licence and IDP (both current), a 1-inch photo taken within the last two years, and a fee of NT$150. The endorsement runs for up to one year, but expires on whichever comes first: the reciprocity terms, the IDP, your licence, or your visa or residence permit. If you are coming for a semester, a work stint or an extended family visit, build this into the first week rather than dealing with a ticket later. What feels like home, and what does not

The familiar part saves you a lot: right-hand traffic, left-hand drive, clearly numbered highways and English signage. The adjustments are these:

• Scooters, everywhere. Check your right rear before turning right; they filter past on the inside. Do not stop inside the scooter waiting box at lights.
• No right turn on red at most intersections. Unlike most US states, it is generally prohibited unless a sign says otherwise.
• Short yellows and lots of cameras. Speed and red-light enforcement is widespread — slow early rather than push through.
• No toll booths. Freeway tolls are charged electronically by distance and settled by the rental company after you return the car.
• Kerb colours matter. Red means no stopping at all, yellow allows a brief stop; white bays are usually metered and an attendant will issue a ticket even where there is no machine.
• Mountain roads are narrow and busy with trucks. Taroko and Alishan take longer than the map suggests.

How pricing works: rental, mileage fee and a fuel card

Where to pick up: Taoyuan Airport or a city branch

Most American visitors land at Taoyuan International Airport (TPE), where GoodCars has a branch: north to Taipei or south toward the centre of the island both work from there.
