The conclusion: as a visitor, a mainland Chinese licence will not work

Recognition in Taiwan is built on reciprocity — a country that accepts Taiwanese licences is accepted in return. No such arrangement exists between Taiwan and mainland China, so the option simply does not exist in the system.

Three practical notes: verification takes time and cannot be rushed through in the same week; the written test covers Taiwanese signs, road markings and traffic law, which do not map one-to-one onto mainland material; and only the issued Taiwanese licence counts — filing the paperwork is not permission to drive.
