JUNGLIA Okinawa by Car: Drive Time from Naha, Parking Rules and How to Plan the Day

The short answer first: the official website puts the drive from Naha at about 90 minutes, and parking currently needs no reservation. You simply pay on the day. Reports from around the opening described a reservation system and some travel sites still say so, so do not let old information worry you.

This guide does not rate the attractions. GoodCars covers only what drivers have to decide: which road to take after the expressway, where to park, how to plan the day, and whether driving makes sense at all. GoodCars has no partnership with JUNGLIA; everything here comes from the official website and public reports.

The quick answers: how long, where to park, when it opens

QuestionOfficial website (at time of writing)What drivers should note
Drive from NahaAbout 90 minutesSame figure for the airport and Naha city, and it excludes picking up the car
Parking reservationNot required, pay on sitePeak periods may switch to advance reservation; the park says it will announce this 2 months ahead
Parking fee2,000 yen per car at the park lotThe partner lot, Parking Nakijin, is 800 yen but needs a shuttle ride
Opening hoursAround 10:00–17:00, varies by dayFrom January, closed on most Mondays except public holidays and peak periods

Other official drive times: about 30 minutes from Nago City or Churaumi Aquarium, about 40 from Onna Village and about 70 from Chatan Town. The website adds that times change with traffic, so allow extra.

Naha to Kyoda is only the first part; the real choices start after the expressway

For the expressway section, take the Okinawa Expressway to its end at Kyoda IC. NEXCO West Japan lists the Naha to Kyoda fare for a standard car as 1,610 yen in cash and 1,040 yen with ETC. The discount is ETC only and NEXCO marks it as time-limited, so check the fare before you go. ETC equipment and cards depend on the supplier and vehicle, so confirm when booking. GoodCars has already compared expressway and local roads in the Northern Okinawa self-drive route, so we will not repeat it here.

Current expressway works (Jan 6–Mar 31): The bridge deck between Ginoza IC and Kyoda IC is being replaced, so traffic runs two-way on one side all day, with 4 lanes reduced to 2. You cannot reach Kyoda IC by expressway without passing through. Heading toward Nago, cars leaving at Ginoza IC use the left lane, and cars continuing to Kyoda IC should move early to the right (passing) lane. NEXCO West Japan warns against forcing a lane change just before the split. It also warns of about 1 km of congestion toward Naha on weekend and holiday evenings. It plans to provide live travel times from 6:00 to 21:00; search for ナビコーン沖縄 to find its works page before you set off.

What differs from the Churaumi run is the part after Kyoda. There are two ways toward JUNGLIA, and they end up on the same road:

SectionOptionsWhat to know
Kyoda IC → north side of NagoA: Route 58 through central Nago
B: Nago East Road to Isagawa IC, then Route 58
B is a motor-vehicle-only bypass, 6.8 km long, currently one lane each way
Shiroganebashi-higashi junction → parkPrefectural Route 84, turning toward the park around the Nakayama and Arashiyama-iriguchi junctionsA and B merge here; about 4 km to Arashiyama-iriguchi that neither option avoids

Reports at the opening said that an electronic sign at the parking exit of Michi-no-Eki Kyoda would show the time to the park on routes A and B, updated every 5 minutes. We cannot confirm it is still running, so treat it as a bonus if you pass it. Travel listings give about 30 minutes from Kyoda IC to the park, but the official access page does not list this section, so use it as a rough guide. Our map estimate for the airport to Kyoda IC is about 1 hour 15 minutes, so adding this stretch runs longer than the official figure, and the table below already allows about 2 hours.

The park also warns that some car navigation units cannot find it and suggests Google Maps. The address is 沖縄県国頭郡今帰仁村字呉我山553番地1 (553-1 Gogayama, Nakijin). For how to combine the car unit and your phone, see our Japan car navigation guide.

Parking: no reservation, but the three lots are very different

Sources disagree because of timing. The official website now says no reservation is needed and you pay on the day, with one caveat: peak periods may switch to advance reservation, and the park says it will post this 2 months ahead. GoodCars suggests checking the website once when you finalize your plans and again before you leave, above all for holidays and summer.

In a big outdoor lot, note which section you parked in before you walk away (illustrative image)

These points only come up if you drive:

  • Pay before you go to the car. The park asks you to pay at the machines in the entrance plaza first, then walk to your car.
  • Forgot to pay? Pay online, and read carefully with a rental. On the official payment page you enter the plate number, and a rental car may show a previous user's record. Pay only your own.
  • Free parking for residents is not for visitors. The free parking on the website is for Okinawa residents only, and rental cars with "わ" or "れ" plates are not exempted automatically.
  • You cannot walk between the park and the spa. Take the free shuttle (about every 10 minutes) or move the car. If you stay until the spa closes, leave promptly, because the lots close too.
  • Check live status on the day. The Parking Status page on the official website shows how busy each lot is.

We could not find the number of spaces on the official website. Figures of about 1,100 and about 2,100 both circulate online, and GoodCars will not pick one. The free off-site parking mentioned in early reports is no longer listed either, so do not rely on older articles.

Traffic around the park: what we could and could not confirm

First, what we could not find: no authoritative figures for measured congestion in the long term after the opening. There are only clues, and GoodCars will not present them as settled:

  • Police forecast before the opening: Route 58 from Miyazato 3-chome to Shiroganebashi-higashi (about 1.6 km), Isagawa IC to Shiroganebashi-higashi (about 3 km), and Prefectural Route 84 from Shiroganebashi-higashi to Arashiyama-iriguchi (about 4 km). On opening day the worst window was expected to be 8:00 to 10:00, when opening time overlaps with commuting and school runs. Another report from the same time put the weekday peak at about 7:00 to just before 9:00, so treat these hours as rough.
  • At the opening: Local news reported no notable jams on opening day or the first weekend, but that says little about peak season.
  • Holiday reference: Using holiday data from before the park opened, so with no park traffic included, the Northern National Highway Office estimated Naha IC to Churaumi at 77 minutes leaving around 7:00 and about 100 minutes leaving around 10:00. The return took longest, about 99 minutes, leaving at 16:00, and about 77 minutes leaving at 20:00. The destination differs, but the route also passes Kyoda and Nago.

Delays around the park tend to build at junctions (illustrative image)

Three things follow. Going: from Naha, leave early as in the table below, but you may still reach Nago during the peak, so you cannot avoid it completely. Staying in the north saves you the expressway and the Kyoda stretch, but the last few kilometers to the park are still inside the forecast congestion area, so leave some margin. Returning: do not leave with the closing crowd. Stay after closing for a meal or the spa (normally open until 20:00), then drive back. Holidays: the same office has suggested that drivers heading for Nakijin leave the expressway early at Ginoza IC and take Route 329 past Haneji Dam. That advice used Kouri Island as its example and was not written for JUNGLIA, so compare it on live navigation first.

Planning the day: start from where you sleep the night before

The baseline hours are 10:00 to 17:00, and the ticket booths and parking open 1 hour before the park. The official family course assumes 5 to 7 hours, and the short-visit ticket about 3 hours. GoodCars suggests working back from reaching the lot 30 minutes before opening:

Staying inOfficial drive timeSuggested departure (10:00 opening)
NahaAbout 90 minutesAround 07:30
ChatanAbout 70 minutesAround 08:00
Onna VillageAbout 40 minutesAround 08:30
Nago or the Churaumi areaAbout 30 minutesAround 08:45

Arrival day: the official 90 minutes excludes pickup, and in peak season getting from landing to the road can take 1 to 2 hours; see our Naha Airport pickup guide. Land at 11:00 and you reach the park around 14:30 with only 2.5 hours left. If you land after noon, move JUNGLIA to the next day.

Round trip from Naha: leave at closing time and you are back around 19:00, or later if you stay for a meal or the spa, so do not plan an evening car return or flight that day. Driving close to 2 hours after a full day out is tiring, so share the wheel if you can.

The easiest plan is to sleep in the north that night. Stay around Nago or Motobu and continue to Churaumi or Kouri Island the next day. See the Northern Okinawa self-drive route for the roads and our Okinawa 4-day itinerary for the full trip.

Churaumi on the same day: the two are about 30 minutes apart, so the issue is the order, not the distance. GoodCars recommends two separate days. If it must be one day, do Churaumi first, then JUNGLIA, and stay in the north that night. The official example for the short-visit ticket uses this order too, with the aquarium at 9:00 and JUNGLIA at noon. Only the reverse order gets tight: the aquarium normally stops admission at 17:30, so you would need to leave JUNGLIA by about 15:30 to see it properly. The short-visit ticket covers just 1 designated attraction, cannot enter the ticket lottery and has a daily sales limit, so check these before you buy.

Driving or JUNGLIA EXPRESS: an honest comparison

The park asked guests to limit car use from the start, and the direct bus is a perfectly good option. GoodCars rents cars, but there is more than one right answer here:

ComparisonDrivingJUNGLIA EXPRESS (from Naha)
Travel timeAbout 90 minutes (official)About 120 minutes (official); the route page says about 2 hours 20 minutes; the timetable shows around 2 hours
DepartureYour choiceFew services; at the time of writing, airport departures fall between morning and midday, with only one a day in some periods
In Naha city you can also board at Kokusai-dōri Entrance and Kenchō-mae (suspended in some periods), at different times from the airport, so see the timetable
ReservationParking needs none for nowDepends on the service: some require one; others take no bookings, so you pay on board, first come, first served, and cannot board if full
How cost worksPer car: rental, fuel, tolls, parkingPer person: fare times headcount, see the official website
LuggageStays in the carLarge suitcases should not be brought into the park, and storage is limited
AlcoholThe driver cannot drink at allFine

On cost, round-trip tolls with ETC plus park parking already come to about 4,080 yen before rental and fuel. For one or two people renting only for this day, it may not pay off; the more people in the car, the better per-car pricing looks. Bus services and fares can change monthly, so we do not list them. Please check the official timetable.

What GoodCars suggests
  • Take the bus if: you stay in Naha and this is your only day up north; nobody wants a long drive; you want a drink.
  • Drive if: you are three or more or have children; you want to add Churaumi or Kouri Island; you want to choose your own arrival time; you are staying in the north.

Four last checks before you go: closures, weather, tickets, the app

  • Closed days: the park has announced that from January it will close on most Mondays for maintenance, except public holidays and peak periods, and there are single closed days before that. Check the official calendar before you fix your plan.
  • Weather: the park runs in rain, but attractions may stop in heavy rain or strong wind, and typhoons can close it entirely. Some attractions close at sunset.
  • Tickets: on-site sales depend on what is left and may sell out. The Japanese page of the official website shows prices for residents of Japan, while the Chinese, English and Korean pages show standard rates, so overseas visitors should use the purchase button on the page in their language. If the park closes, tickets bought from the official website are cancelled by the park. Traffic reasons such as a cancelled flight or closed expressway allow a cancellation request with proof. Personal reasons are not refunded, though date changes are possible under conditions. Other sellers follow their own rules.
  • App and shoes: some attractions need a ticket won by lottery in the official app, and the morning round opens before the park does, so install it first. Sandals are refused on some attractions, so keep closed shoes in the car.

Slippery wet roads, bus lanes and other Okinawa driving points are covered by GoodCars in the Okinawa car rental guide.

Before you go: can your license be used in Japan?

Most visitors need an International Driving Permit in the 1949 Geneva Convention format, plus their home license and passport. Japan accepts only the Geneva format; permits in the Vienna Convention format are not valid. You may drive for up to 1 year from entry, within the validity of your license.

Exceptions: Licenses from Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco and Taiwan use the original license plus an official Japanese translation, not an IDP, and self-made translations are not accepted. Licenses from mainland China and Indonesia cannot be used to drive in Japan, even with an IDP.

Full details are in our Japan car rental complete guide. In Okinawa you pick up at Naha Airport Station. Insurance, ETC and child seats depend on the supplier and the booking page, so please confirm them when booking through GoodCars. For child seat rules, see our Japan family self-drive guide.

FAQ

Q1. Do I need to reserve JUNGLIA parking?

Not at the moment. Arrive and pay before you leave. Peak periods may switch to advance reservation, and the park says it will announce this 2 months ahead, so check the website again before you go.

Q2. How long is the drive from Naha Airport to JUNGLIA?

The official website says about 90 minutes, via the Okinawa Expressway to Kyoda and then local roads. Plan on 2 hours, and allow extra time during the Jan 6–Mar 31 expressway works. That excludes pickup, so GoodCars suggests allowing around 3.5 hours from landing.

Q3. Is there a parking discount for rental cars?

We could not find one for rental cars or overseas visitors. At the time of writing the park lot is 2,000 yen per car, and the free parking on the website is for Okinawa residents only.

Q4. What if I forget to pay for parking?

Enter your plate number on the official online payment page. A rental car may show a previous user's record, so pay only your own, and use the official contact form if anything looks wrong.

Q5. Can I go straight there on my arrival day?

With an early flight, yes, but expect only about half a day. If you land after noon, GoodCars suggests staying around Naha on day one and going the next day.

Q6. Can I do JUNGLIA and Churaumi on the same day?

You can, if you go to Churaumi first and JUNGLIA second; the other way round, you must leave the park by about 15:30. Either way you get only about half a day in the park and return to Naha late, so we suggest two separate days, or sleeping in the north and adding Churaumi the next day.

Q7. What happens in rain or a typhoon?

The park opens in rain, but attractions may stop in heavy rain or strong wind, and a typhoon can close the park, so check official notices and the app. If heavy rain hits on the road, slow down rather than racing to make the day work.
