Taiwan's cherry blossoms open from late January in the lowlands to March and early April in the mountains. If you plan to chase them by car in 2027, the first question is not "where is prettiest" but "will I be allowed to drive in?" During the blossom season, Wuling Farm does not let day visitors drive in, Alishan closes the upper highway to private cars on set weekend mornings, Yangmingshan checks permits on its main access road at weekends, and Smangus needs a pre-booked vehicle permit. These rules shape your itinerary more than the bloom forecast does.

This guide covers seven popular cherry blossom spots across northern, central and southern Taiwan: typical bloom windows, the traffic rules officially announced in past seasons, and how long it takes to drive there from the nearest GoodCars pickup point. Most 2027 traffic details have not been announced yet (they usually come out 1–2 months before the season), so we mark clearly what is already confirmed for 2027 and what reflects the 2026 season. Always follow the official announcement for the year you travel.

Use this table to plan 2027. Dates marked "2026" are from the most recent official announcement; the "driving rules" column describes past practice, and 2027 details will follow each year's notice.

Drive times: Google Maps driving directions from each store address, checked off-peak on the evening of Sept 25, 2026. Expect much longer at weekends in blossom season. Bloom dates shift with the weather, so check each site's official bloom updates before you go.

How to time the 2027 season: lowlands first, mountains later

The general order is simple: early varieties such as Taiwan mountain cherry and three-color cherry open first, Yoshino and other later varieties follow, and higher elevations bloom later than the lowlands. New Taipei's landscape office notes that the three-color cherries behind Tianyuan Temple open first, with the Yoshino cherries around the temple tower about a month later. At Alishan, the "king" Yoshino cherry peaks in mid-March, and double-flowered varieties carry on into April.

• Late January – mid February: Tianyuan Temple three-color cherries, mountain cherries along the Northern Cross-Island Highway, early varieties at the Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village.
• Mid February – early March: Yangmingshan Flower Festival, Wuling Farm, Smangus, Lalashan, Yoshino cherries at the Culture Village.
• Mid March – early April: Alishan Yoshino and double-flowered cherries, Tianyuan Temple Yoshino.

Watch three 2027 public holidays (from the official 2027 government calendar): Lunar New Year Feb 4 (Thu) – Feb 10 (Wed), Peace Memorial Day weekend Feb 27 (Sat) – Mar 1 (Mon), and Children's Day + Tomb Sweeping Apr 3 (Sat) – Apr 6 (Tue). All three fall in blossom season, when both the scenic spots and rental cars are busiest. Go on weekdays if you can; if you must travel over a holiday, book your car early.

Northern Taiwan: Yangmingshan and Tianyuan Temple (pick up at Taipei Main Station)

1. Yangmingshan: permit checks on Yangde Boulevard at weekends

The Yangmingshan Flower Festival is run by the Taipei City Parks Office and centers on the Flower Clock at Yangming Park (台北市北投區湖山路二段26號, enter this address in your GPS). The 2026 festival ran Feb 5 (Thu) – Mar 15 (Sun), with cherries, azaleas and daffodils blooming in turn; 2027 dates will be announced by the Parks Office. From our Taipei Main Station store it is about 35–40 minutes, 17–20 km by Google Maps off-peak.

What drivers need to know (based on past Taipei Department of Transportation notices):

• Yangde Boulevard weekend control: on festival weekends and holidays, the uphill checkpoints (Fuxing Bridge and Lane 1, Section 2 of Zhishan Rd) run roughly 07:00–16:00, and the downhill checkpoint (Yangming Rd Sec. 1 at Zhongheng St) roughly 14:00–18:00. During those hours only vehicles with a permit may pass; permits go mainly to local residents and work or official needs, not to sightseers.
• No public parking at the Flower Clock: during the festival the lot is for buses and disabled-badge vehicles only, and parking up the mountain is scarce. Illegally parked cars get towed.
• One-way roads: Zhongxing Road runs one-way from the Flower Clock toward the Yangjin Highway, with a wider one-way zone at weekends; Shamao Road north of Zhongheng Street is closed to vehicles (except buses) at weekends.

Best approach with a rental car: ① go on a weekday (the Yangde Boulevard permit check applies only on weekends and holidays); ② at weekends, park at the foot of the mountain. In past festivals, Bailing High School (百齡高中) and Fulin Park (福林公園) car parks gave the first 3 hours free to drivers transferring to the bus; ③ in the afternoon, drive on to Tamsui for Tianyuan Temple or the sunset. 2. Tianyuan Temple, Tamsui: three-color cherries first, Yoshino later

Wuji Tianyuan Temple (無極天元宮, 新北市淡水區北新路三段36號) blooms in two waves: the three-color cherries on the back hill first, then the Yoshino cherries around the temple tower about a month later. In 2026, the three-color cherries peaked from late January to mid-February, the Yoshino cherries in mid to late March, and the grounds were lit up in the evenings from Jan 29 to Feb 11. From Taipei Main Station it is about 35–41 minutes, 23–32 km.

Parking is limited and the approach road is narrow. At busy times in past seasons, Tamsui police closed access to cars once the site was full, except vehicles with resident permits. Go on a weekday or early in the morning. At weekends, park in Tamsui town and take bus 866, 875, 876 or 877 to the "Tianyuan Temple" stop (the public transport option recommended by New Taipei City). Taoyuan mountains: Lalashan and Enai Farm

According to Taoyuan City Government, cherries along the Northern Cross-Island Highway (北橫公路, Provincial Highway 7) start with mountain cherries and weeping cherries in late January, while later varieties such as Yoshino, Fuji and Chishima cherries bloom around Baling and Lalashan into mid-March. In 2026 the city's scenic area office published a "cherry walking map" with weekly bloom updates. Enai Farm (恩愛農場, 桃園市復興區華陵里上巴陵中心路143號) in Upper Baling is known for its Fuji and Chishima cherries.

• Route: the farm recommends Freeway 3 to the Daxi exit → Provincial Highway 7 (Northern Cross-Island Highway) → cross Baling Bridge → follow signs toward Lalashan → Upper Baling.
• Drive time: about 2 h 10–17 min (78–87 km) from HSR Taoyuan Station, or 2 h 6–13 min (69–88 km) from our Taoyuan Store, by Google Maps. The second half is mountain road.
• Traffic control: roads around Upper Baling are narrow and busy at weekends in blossom season. In past seasons police controlled traffic based on volume (for example, directing cars to the Upper Baling car park). Follow on-site marshals, and check Taoyuan City's notices for any shuttle service.

Hsinchu mountains: Smangus (2027 dates confirmed)

The Smangus (司馬庫斯) Atayal village has announced its 2027 cherry blossom season: Feb 13 (Sat) – Mar 10 (Wed), 26 days. Phone bookings for season accommodation open at 9:00 on October 1, 2026 (bloom dates are an estimate). From HSR Hsinchu Station it is about 2 h 37–46 min, 77–90 km by Google Maps, finishing on the narrow, winding Route Zhu-60 (竹60線) and the village access road.

Blossom-season traffic control (Hsinchu County's past notices):

• The controlled section runs from Route Zhu-60 at 39.5K (the Taigang junction, 泰崗岔路口) to the village. During the season every vehicle needs a permit, whether staying, camping or visiting for the day.
• Day-trip permits are booked in advance and capped (in 2024: 50 cars and 100 scooters per day) through the Smangus official website.
• Cars have set uphill and downhill windows to avoid meeting on the narrow road (in 2024: uphill before 12:40 or after 15:00; downhill before 14:00 or after 16:20).

Wuling Farm: no self-drive entry for day visitors

Wuling Farm (武陵農場) is where most visitors get caught out. Taking the 2026 season (control period Feb 13 – Mar 1, 17 days) as the example, the farm's official notice said:

• Vehicles without a farm-issued vehicle pass may not enter Route Zhong-124 (the road into the farm). You will be turned back.
• Passes go only to guests with confirmed stays at the farm's lodges, resort, campground (or Qilan / Mingchi lodges), or hikers with an approved mountain permit: one room, one car, one pass. The pass is tied to a registered plate number, and the car you arrive in must match it.
• Day visitors must come by designated shuttle bus (Kuo-Kuang, Taile or Fengyuan bus companies), within a daily cap of 6,000 visitors.

Two ways to do it with a rental car:

1. Book a stay inside the farm and use it to apply for the vehicle pass. A rental car's plate number is usually only known at pickup, and the pass must be printed and displayed on the windshield, so ask the farm or your lodge beforehand when you can register or change the plate.
2. Drive to a shuttle stop and ride in: in 2026 the blossom shuttles ran on six routes, from Taipei Bus Station, Taipei City Hall Bus Station, Yilan Bus Station, Luodong Bus Station, Sanxing Township Sports Park (三星鄉綜合運動場) and Lishan, and the Highway Bureau set up a temporary car park at the Sanxing sports park. It is about 22 minutes from our Luodong store and 29–30 minutes from Yilan Station (Google Maps). Shuttle tickets must be bought in advance; in 2026 sales opened at noon on January 7.

If you have a farm booking and a pass, the drive from Yilan Station via Provincial Highways 7 and 7A (台7線、台7甲線) takes about 2 h 22 min, 92 km. During the 2026 season a damaged section of Highway 7A near 52K (Xianggu Bridge) was down to one lane with signal control (06:00–17:00 daily), so allow waiting time. Nantou: Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village + Qingjing Farm

Nantou is the easiest region for a blossom trip with no permit to chase. The Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village (九族文化村) held its 2026 Cherry Blossom Festival from Jan 31 to Mar 8. The park describes the order as weeping cherries first, double-flowered cherries in early to mid February, then Yoshino, Fuji, mountain cherries and the white Taiwan snow cherry in mid to late February. Qingjing Farm (清境農場, 南投縣仁愛鄉仁和路170號) has a 500 m "Cherry Blossom Trail", about 15 minutes' walk one way, lined with trees that bloom in February.

• Drive time: about 58 min – 1 h (66–67 km) from HSR Taichung Station to the Culture Village via Freeway 6, and about 1 h 25 min (87 km) to Qingjing Farm (Google Maps).
• How to combine: the Culture Village sits next to Sun Moon Lake, so pair them in one day, or continue up to Qingjing for a night.
• Winter mountain roads: during cold snaps, high sections around Hehuanshan may require snow chains. Check Highway Bureau road notices before heading above Qingjing.

Chiayi: Alishan's weekend-morning shuttle rule

The Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency (Chiayi Branch) announced that the 2026 Alishan Flower Season ran Mar 10 (Tue) – Apr 10 (Fri). The recreation area has 31 cherry varieties: the Yoshino "cherry king" peaks around mid-March, Yoshino trees around Zhushan and Zhaoping bloom until late March, and double-flowered varieties such as Takasago, Kanzan and Fugenzo take over in early April until mid-April. The Highway Bureau's season start date has been March 10 in each of 2024, 2025 and 2026.

How traffic worked in 2026 (Chiayi Branch and Highway Bureau notices):

• On 10 set days (Mar 14, 15, 21, 22, 28, 29 and Apr 3–6), from 6:00 to 11:00, private cars were barred from Provincial Highway 18 between 66K and 88.2K. Drivers parked at the 61K Leye Service Area (樂野服務區) and took the flower-season transfer shuttle up. Vehicles with proof of accommodation or work passes, licensed taxis and a few other cases were exempt.
• During the season the recreation area also directed cars to temporary parking along Highway 18 at 89–95K (toward Tataka), with free shuttles to the Alishan entrance (08:00–18:00 on weekdays, 05:00–18:00 on holidays).
• The Chiayi Branch recommended that drivers pre-buy the online "shuttle + entry" bundle to skip one queue.

From HSR Chiayi Station to the Alishan National Forest Recreation Area takes about 1 h 53–56 min, 82–85 km; to the Leye Service Area about 1 h 6–10 min, 55–57 km (Google Maps). On control days, the easiest way to drive all the way up is to stay overnight on the mountain (vehicles with proof of accommodation were exempt) or to go up after the 11:00 control ends. 2027 control days will follow the Chiayi Branch and Highway Bureau notices. 5 driving tips for blossom season

• Check access rules before booking a room: Wuling and Smangus are "no permit, no entry"; Alishan and Yangmingshan are "no entry at certain times". Getting the order wrong can waste the whole day.
• Start early: car parks at popular spots fill up by mid-morning; aim to arrive early at Tianyuan Temple, Enai Farm and the Culture Village.
• Mountain driving: Highway 7, Route Zhu-60, Highway 7A and Highway 18 have long descents and tight bends. Use a low gear (S or L) downhill to spare the brakes, and pull over to let oncoming cars pass on narrow sections. Taiwan drives on the right.
• Fuel in the mountains: filling stations are scarce, so top up before you climb using the car's dedicated fuel card. Fuel is already included in the mileage fee, so you pay nothing at the pump.
• Weather: mountain temperatures swing sharply and fog is common. Use fog lights and slow down, and watch for snow-chain notices on high roads during cold snaps.

What it costs: rental + mileage fee + fuel card

Q1. When is the best time for cherry blossoms in Taiwan in 2027?

For the most spots in one trip, aim for mid-February to early March (Yangmingshan, Wuling, Smangus, Lalashan, the Culture Village). Lowland early bloomers start in late January and early February (Tianyuan Temple's three-color cherries, mountain cherries in Taoyuan). Alishan's Yoshino cherries peak from mid to late March. Bloom shifts with the weather, so check official bloom updates the week before you go.

Q2. Can I drive a rental car into Wuling Farm during cherry season?

Only if you are staying inside the farm. In 2026, just overnight, camping and permitted hiking guests could get a vehicle pass; day visitors had to ride the blossom shuttle, and you can leave your rental car at a shuttle stop such as the Sanxing Township Sports Park. 2027 rules will follow the farm's notice.

Q3. Is Alishan closed to cars every day during the flower season?

No. In 2026 the Highway 18 restriction (66K–88.2K) applied only on 10 set days from 6:00 to 11:00. At other times you could drive up and follow directions to the temporary parking and free shuttle. Weekdays are the easiest.

In past seasons, day-trip vehicle permits were booked online on the Smangus official website, with a daily cap (50 cars in 2024). The 2027 season (Feb 13 – Mar 10) is confirmed; watch Hsinchu County Government and the village website for the permit opening date. Without a permit you cannot drive past 39.5K on Route Zhu-60.

Q6. Mountain driving uses a lot of fuel. Who pays, and do I refill before returning?
